Course psychology tips to elevate your golf game
Want to become a golf pro? Whether you’re a beginner or experienced player, there are a number of ways you can elevate your game on and off the course.
Toby Walker, Assistant Golf Professional and Golf Coach at Yarrambat Park Golf Course is sharing his top tips for golf players, regardless of playing ability.
At Belgravia Golf Management, players of all ages and abilities can build on foundational golf skills, test and improve their playing skills and enhance their overall golf game.
For beginners:

1. Build a balanced setup.
Good golf starts before the club moves. Keep your feet about shoulder-width apart, maintain a slight bend through your knees and hips and feel balanced through the middle of your feet.
2. Relaxation is key – keep your grip comfortable.
Avoid squeezing the club too tightly. A relaxed grip reduces tension and helps the club move more naturally, improving both control and consistency.
3. Focus on contact rather than power.
Beginners often try to hit the ball too hard. Start with shorter, controlled swings and aim to strike the ball cleanly. Distance will improve as your technique develops.
For advanced players:

4. Improve your course management.
You don’t always need to attack the flag. Understand your shot patterns, choose smarter targets and avoid bringing the biggest hazards into play. Better decisions can lower your score without changing your swing.
5. Being present – develop a consistent mental routine.
Commit to each shot, accept the result and move on. Use the same pre-shot routine every time and focus on the process rather than your score. Staying present is one of the biggest differences between good players and great players.
How Toby elevates his golf game

Toby has gained valuable experience playing and coaching in Australia, with several years under his belt competing professionally throughout Asia and China.
“Competing in China was an incredible experience,” said Toby. “Playing tournament golf internationally exposes you to different courses, conditions, cultures and styles of play, requiring you to adapt quickly.”
Toby added that the experience elevated his game by improving his course management, discipline and mental resilience.
“At that level, every shot matters.”
“Preparing, being patient and committed under pressure really makes a difference.”
The pro also said his proudest moments come from seeing golfers achieve new milestones – a beginner making clean contact for the first time, breaking a scoring milestone, or regaining confidence after setbacks.
Keeping your golf skills sharp
Toby said he believes golf will become more accessible, technology-driven and flexible, allowing golfers to practise and elevate their game further.
“Indoor golf simulators, launch monitors and advanced putting technology will provide accurate feedback, regardless of the weather or time of day.”
“Technology will continue to strengthen coaching, but the goal will remain the same: helping more people enjoy golf and improve their game,” concluded Toby.
We believe golf is a game for everyone – with a range of physical, mental and social benefits. Practicing your skills is a great way to improve your wellbeing, feel closer to your community and enjoy golf throughout your life.
