Four essential tips from Fremantle PGA Professional, Keenan Baatjes
Want to perfect your long iron strikes? Fremantle PGA Professional, Keenan Baatjes is sharing four simple fundamentals to help golfers of all ages and abilities improve their confidence, consistency and performance on the greens.
Whether you’re new to golf or looking to sharpen your skills, mastering the fundamentals can help you enjoy the game more and build capability every time you step onto the course.

1. Build your stance
Start with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Think of a pyramid: wide and stable at the base. A solid foundation helps you stay balanced throughout the swing and create a more consistent strike.
2. Position your ball
Position the ball slightly forward in your stance, approximately three ball-widths ahead of centre. This encourages a shallower angle of attack, helping you strike the ball cleanly and make solid contact from the middle of the clubface.
3. Swing it
Make a full backswing and focus on maintaining your posture. Avoid standing up or dipping down during the swing. Stay centred, rotate around your spine, and let your body turn through the shot. Good rotation is key to delivering the club consistently and striking your long irons with confidence.
4. Strike and follow through
Swing with good tempo and stay patient through the shot. Rushing the downswing often leads to poor contact and causes you to lose your posture. As you finish, make sure your belt buckle and sternum are pointing towards the target. A balanced finish is a great sign that you have stayed in control throughout the swing.
Consistency is the key to great long iron strikes
Remember: it’s about mastering the fundamentals and repeating them consistently. Practice these four steps and watch your confidence grow on the greens.
